Courses Minor Programmes Japanese Language

Japanese Language Studies

The School of Languages, Literacies and Translation offers three minor programmes, namely the Japanese Language Studies, the Chinese Language Studies and the Arabic Language Studies. Students have to accumulate 16 compulsory units. Students taking the minor package have to begin with level 100 and then proceed to the subsequent levels.
Japanese Language Studies
The courses offered are as follows:
LLJ 100/4 - Elementary Japanese
LLJ 200/4 - Intermediate Japanese
LLJ 300/4 - Advanced Japanese I
LLJ 400/4 - Advanced Japanese II
LLJ 401/4 - Business Japanese (optional)
LLJ 100 - Elementary Japanese
This course introduces kanji (80 characters) and a vocabulary of about 400 words. Emphasis is placed on pronunciation, verbs and a variety of adjectives.
LLJ 200 - Intermediate Japanese
This course is a continuation of LLJ 100. In this course an addition of 400 new words and 100 kanji characters are introduced. Emphasis is placed on imperatives, construction of longer sentences, including other types of sentences and reporting direct and indirect speech.
LLJ 300 - Advanced Japanese I
This course is a continuation of LLJ 200. There are an addition of 350 new words and 110 kanji characters. Stress is given to language related to verbal polite statements, connective words, reasons, time and construction of more difficult compound sentences.
LLJ 400 - Advanced Japanese (II)
An addition of 500 new words and 110 kanji characters are introduced at this level. Emphasis is placed on modern Japanese language words and phrases, as well as complex and specific sentences.udies
