Arabic Language Studies
The School of Languages, Literacies and Translation offers three minor programmes, namely the Japanese Language Studies, the Chinese Language Studies and the Arabic Language Studies. Students have to accumulate 16 compulsory units. Students taking the minor package have to begin with level 100 and then proceed to the subsequent levels.
Arabic Language Studies
The courses offered are as follows:

LLA 100 - Arabic Communication I
This course exposes students to the Arabic alphabet, the sound of each letter, the usage of letters in words and their usage in short sentences. Students are also taught to recognize nouns, verbs and particles in Arabic. Appropriate dialogues are discussed to equip students with the skill of pronouncing the letters and words correctly and accurately in basic communication. This course also exposes students to the skill of writing in Arabic. Some cultural aspects such as greetings and farewells including speeches in the form of prayers are also incorporated. In addition, this course also covers expressions to indicate directions, time, dates, days, months and years. The number of words introduced at the level is about 500

LLA 100 - Arabic Communication I

LLA 200 - Arabic Communication II
Students are exposed to basic aspects of the language emphasizing the functions of nouns, verbs, particles and the construction of sentences. Sentence structure analysis is taught at this level. Grammar at an intermediate level is taught. This course also introduces daily situations in places such as shops, the post office and the library as well as issues related to health and hobbies. Arabic customs such as visiting, having meals and taboos are also introduced. The number of words introduced at this level is about 1000.
LLA 300 - Arabic Communication III
This course introduces Arabic vocabulary and appropriate grammar used in conversations in various situations. Formal letter writing and reading of materials which can be used by students in authentic situations are emphasized. Customs related to Arabic dressing as well as asking questions and expressing thanks are introduced. At the end of the course, students will be able to use about 1500 words.
LLA 400 – Arabic Communication IV
At this level, students are exposed to communication in order to obtain information, make reservations, place orders and give briefings. Advanced grammar involving a variety of sentence patterns is taught. Arabic Literature (al-Balaghah) is also introduced so that students are able to appreciate the profound meanings in the language. About 2000 words are introduced to students at this level.
LLA 401 – Business Arabic
This course emphasizes aspects of communication related to business. It covers the use of grammar in general. In addition, this course introduces business terminology as well as related current issues. It also introduces the writing of minutes of meetings, memoranda, job application letters, faxes, e-mail, telephoning, etc. The course also introduces Arabic culture in general. About 2500 words are introduced to students at this level.
