The foreign language courses offered by the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation can be taken by students as option or compulsory courses or to fulfil the number of units required for graduation. Students are not allowed to register for more than one foreign language course per semester. They must complete at least two levels of a foreign language course before they are allowed to register for another foreign language course. However, students are not required to complete all four levels of a foreign language course.
LAS 100 - Thai Language I

LAS 100 - Thai Language I
This course is a beginners’ course for students with no background in the Thai language. It emphasizes the communicative aspects of the language, i.e., listening comprehension and speaking. The reading and writing of the Thai script are not included in this course. Grammar, reading comprehension and writing are taught through the use of transcriptions. At the end of the course, students will be able to speak basic Thai in daily situations and to construct simple sentences with a vocabulary content of approximately 500 words.
LAS 200 - Thai Language II
This course is a continuation of LAS 100 with emphasis on increasing students’ vocabulary content and improving their understanding of the language, word usage and grammatical structures. Students will be taught the basic Thai writing system (consonants, vowels and tone rules). At the end of the course, students will be able to understand and converse in Thai more effectively as well as write/translate short compositions and dialogues with a vocabulary content of approximately 800 words.
LAS 300 - Thai Language III
This course is a continuation of LAS 200. It is the beginning of an intermediate level of the Thai language with emphasis on listening comprehension and speaking. The contents introduce students to a more formal style of the language in the speaking and grammar components with the usage of the passive voice and compound and complex sentences. At the end of the course, students will acquire a vocabulary content of about 1200 words and will be able to read loan words and short texts in Thai.
LAS 400 - Thai Language IV
This is the final course of the series completing the intermediate level of the Thai language which incorporates listening comprehension and speaking. Aspects of Thai culture will be introduced in the reading comprehension texts. At the end of the course, students will acquire a vocabulary content of approximately 1500 words and will be able to speak Thai more effectively with the use of common “slang” and “idioms”. They will also be able to read and understand advertisements, short news items and announcements (in Thai) in addition to having a better understanding of the Thai culturen.
THIRD LANGUAGE COURSES
Third Language Courses are offered as University Courses. They are offered as a package of three (3) levels, 2 units per level. The total number of units per package is 6. Students who sign up for this package will obtain one (1) extra unit upon graduation.

LTS 100 - Communicative Thai I
This is an elementary course for students who have no prior knowledge of the Thai Language. The course content emphasizes the communicative aspects (comprehension, listening and speaking). At the end of the course, students will be able to speak simple Thai in daily situations and have a basic understanding of the Thai Language so that they can construct simple sentences and compound sentences by using a vocabulary of approximately 400 words. Students will also be able to have a basic understanding of the Thai culture and identify the Thai alphabet in preparation for studying the Thai system of writing/reading in the next level (LTS 200).
LTS 200 - Communicative Thai II
This is a continuation of Communicative Thai I (LTS100). The course is aimed at helping students master the aspects of comprehension, speaking, vocabulary, use of words and reading (Thai writing) including the spelling system / reading loan words. At the end of the course, students will be able to read and understand phrases and short sentences in Thai. Students will also improve their listening and speaking skills and have a deeper understanding of Thai vocabulary. This will enable them to write dialogues/short essays (100-120 words) with a vocabulary of about 800 words.
LTS 300 - Communicative Thai III
This course is a continuation of Communicative Thai II (LTS200). The course is aimed at helping students master comprehension and speaking so that they will be able to improve their listening and speaking skills more effectively in various social situations including more formal conversations. Students will learn approximately 1200 Thai words. At the end of the course, students will have a deeper understanding of the Thai language and will be able to construct compound (with a set of conjunctions), complex and passive sentences. The students will also be able to write essays and translate short texts (150-200 words). Students will also be able to read advertisements, announcements and short news reports in Thai and have a deeper understanding of the Thai culture.
