Tamil


The foreign language courses offered by the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation can be taken by students as option or compulsory courses or to fulfil the number of units required for graduation. Students are not allowed to register for more than one foreign language course per semester. They must complete at least two levels of a foreign language course before they are allowed to register for another foreign language course. However, students are not required to complete all four levels of a foreign language course.
LAT 100 – Tamil I

LAT 100 – Tamil I 

This course introduces 120 letters in Tamil and includes a vocabulary of about 600 words. It covers pronunciation, syllables and words in Tamil. The course also incorporates formal and informal greetings, expressions to indicate days, months and years, possessives, questions, statements, denials as well as basic verbs in the present tense. Appropriate dialogues are discussed to enable students to acquire communicative skills.

LAT 200 – Tamil II

This course is a continuation of LAT100. It introduces 127 letters in Tamil and includes a vocabulary of about 700 words. It covers expressions related to telling time, biodata, family members, celebrations, etc. Students are also introduced to prepositions, conjunctions, specifiers, etc. Appropriate dialogues which include discussions about daily family life, celebrations as well as vacations are introduced to students so that they will be able to communicate in a variety of situations.
 
LAT 300 - Tamil III
  
This course is a continuation of LAT 200. Learners are taught a vocabulary of approximately 300 words. The negative forms of verbs are also covered. The process of forming words that are similar to compound words is also taught. Learners will learn appropriate sentence structures so that they can communicate in Tamil with fluency.

THIRD LANGUAGE COURSES
  
Third Language Courses are offered as University Courses. They are offered as a package of three (3) levels, 2 units per level. The total number of units per package is 6. Students who sign up for this package will obtain one (1) extra unit upon graduation.

LTT 100 - Communicative Tamil I
  
In this course, students will be introduced to approximately 120 letters of the alphabet in Tamil and a vocabulary of approximately 500 words. The course will cover aspects of pronunciation, syllables and writing. Students will learn greetings and the names of days, months and year. Students will also be introduced to interrogatives, declaratives, and basic present tense verbs. The course emphasizes communicative skills by providing more practice in conversations that can be used in daily life.

LTT 200 - Communicative Tamil II
  
This is a continuation of the LTT 100 course. The students will be introduced to a vocabulary of approximately 1000 words related to aspects such as personal information, family members and festivals. The students will also be exposed to the use of proper nouns, conjunctions, adjectives, verbs and their conjugations. Students will be exposed to dialogues that are related to daily life in the family, campus, festivals, travel and others to enable them to communicate in a variety of situations.

LTT 300 - Communicative Tamil III
  
This is a continuation of the LTT 200 course. The students will be introduced to a vocabulary of approximately 1500 words. Various forms of declension and the formation of words that are similar to compound words will also be taught. Students will be introduced to new sentence structures to enable them to communicate more fluently and effectively in Tamil.
