The foreign language courses offered by the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation can be taken by students as option or compulsory courses or to fulfil the number of units required for graduation. Students are not allowed to register for more than one foreign language course per semester. They must complete at least two levels of a foreign language course before they are allowed to register for another foreign language course. However, students are not required to complete all four levels of a foreign language course.
LAE 100 - Spanish Language I
This course is an introduction to the Spanish language and culture. Students will be introduced to the Spanish phonological system in order to distinguish typical Spanish pronunciation. At this level, students are expected to master basic grammatical structures and to command a range of vocabulary related to everyday life communicative situations. The Spanish culture is introduced incidentally through texts.
LAE 200 - Spanish Language II
This course is a continuation of LAE 100 in which students will enhance their command of grammatical structures and the range of vocabulary students will acquire is increased to 2000 words. The writing and speaking skills (productive skills) will be emphasized more than the reading and listening skills (receptive skills). Furthermore, cultural aspects will be dealt with as a way of personal enrichment.
LAE 300 - Spanish Language III
This course aims both to consolidate students’ command of Spanish grammatical structures and their acquisition of active and passive vocabulary. Greater emphasis will be placed on the development of students’ oral communication and rules of usage will be introduced. Authentic materials such as newspaper articles, movies and television programmes will be used as stimuli for a greater understanding of the Spanish culture and traditions.
LAE 400 - Spanish Language IV
This course is the final level in which students will be exposed to the most complex grammatical structures and verb tenses. Topics related to the students’ interests will be dealt with and students will need to understand the gist of texts and their details, identify and extract main points, use context and other clues to interpret meaning, recognize opinions, attitudes and personal feelings, and draw conclusions. Autonomous learning will be promoted so that students are able to continue exploring the language on their own. As language goes hand-in-hand with culture, LAE 400 will also offer insights into the culture and civilisation of Spanish-speaking countries and communities.
THIRD LANGUAGE COURSES
Third Language Courses are offered as University Courses. They are offered as a package of three (3) levels, 2 units per level. The total number of units per package is 6. Students who sign up for this package will obtain one (1) extra unit upon graduation.
