German


The foreign language courses offered by the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation can be taken by students as option or compulsory courses or to fulfil the number of units required for graduation. Students are not allowed to register for more than one foreign language course per semester. They must complete at least two levels of a foreign language course before they are allowed to register for another foreign language course. However, students are not required to complete all four levels of a foreign language course.
LAG 100 - German Language I

LAG 100 - German Language I 

LAG 100: "Deutsch für Anfänger" (German for Beginners) is a course introducing the German language to learners who have no German background knowledge. It offers a direct access to the German language, to the country and its people, to the culture, and communication. The four skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as vocabulary building and grammar are taught. The listening and speaking skills are given more emphasis compared to the other skills.

LAG 200 - German Language II  

LAG 200: "Deutsch für Anfänger mit Vorwissen" (German for Beginners with basic knowledge of German Language) is a continuation of LAG 100. It integrates communicative, intercultural and action-oriented language teaching methodologies, and more emphasis is placed on the reading and writing skills.

LAG 300 - German Language III

LAG 300: “Deutsch für fortgeschrittene Anfänger” (German for Advanced Beginners) is the final level of the “survival kit” of the “Basic language use A 1” in accordance with the regulations of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen. This basic level is also corresponding to the syllabus of the GOETHE INSTITUT for teaching German as a foreign language. By passing the three courses, LAG 100, 200, and 300, students are able to sit for the official “Start Deutsch 1” exam administered by the GOETHE INSTITUT. This will enable them to continue their studies in Germany. In this course, students will be involved in discussions on more complex matters in the German language as they will be able to speak more fluently. Learners will also be taught essay writing.

LAG 400 - German Language IV

LAG 400: "Deutsch für Fortgeschrittene" (German for Advanced Learners) is an advanced German language course which emphasizes the speaking and writing skills. It places emphasis on complex language structures using subordination, passive voice, etc. Analyzing different kinds of texts and discussing them as well as the topics at this level will improve students’ proficiency in the German language. At the end of the course, the students will have completed the level "Basic language use A 2" in accordance with the regulations of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - Gemeinsamer Europäischer Referenzrahmen. They will be able to sit for the official “Start Deutsch 2” exam administered by the GOETHE INSTITUT.

THIRD LANGUAGE COURSES

Third Language Courses are offered as University Courses. They are offered as a package of three (3) levels, 2 units per level. The total number of units per package is 6. Students who sign up for this package will obtain one (1) extra unit upon graduation.

LTG 100 - Communicative German I

This course is designed for adult students who intend to study German for workplace communication with German-speaking colleagues, to pursue their tertiary education in Germany or visit German-speaking countries. Students will be exposed to a variety of situations that may be encountered in German-speaking countries and will have the opportunity to make comparisons with their personal experiences. Guided by level A1 of the Council of Europe Framework, students will learn to communicate in everyday situations and understand conversations and short written texts as well as write short notes in German. Students will use between 400-500 words in conversation and writing.

LTG 200 - Communicative German II

This course is designed for adult learners who have passed Conversational German – Elementary level A1/1 of the Council of Europe Framework and who will continue their studies at the A1 elementary level. They will learn to communicate in everyday situations, understand conversations and written texts as well as write short notes in German. In contrast to level A1/1, this course will increase the students’ vocabulary which will enable them to converse in everyday situations. Students will use approximately 800 words in conversation and writing.

LTG 300 - Communicative German III

This course is designed for adult learners who have passed Intermediate German 1- A1/2 of the Council of Europe Framework. Students will complete level A1 and commence classes in Level A2. Students must complete level A1 before commencing classes in Level A2. Students will be able to understand sentences and expressions commonly used in daily situations (personal and family details, shopping, work and immediate surroundings), talk about simple and routine matters clearly, and describe their background, immediate surroundings and matters of importance. Students will use approximately 1200-1500 words in conversation and writing. Upon passing this course, students will be eligible to register for the International Goethe Institute “Start Deutsch 1” examinations.
