The foreign language courses offered by the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation can be taken by students as option or compulsory courses or to fulfil the number of units required for graduation. Students are not allowed to register for more than one foreign language course per semester. They must complete at least two levels of a foreign language course before they are allowed to register for another foreign language course. However, students are not required to complete all four levels of a foreign language course.
LAC 100 - Chinese Language I
This is a course at the elementary level. Students are introduced to a vocabulary of about 200 words. They are taught forms of greeting and enquiry, the writing of Chinese characters, the pronunciation of characters in Hanyu Pinyin and the memorisation of texts. Students are also taught to construct sentences and to translate from Chinese into Bahasa Malaysia and vice versa.
LAC 200 - Chinese Language II
This is a continuation of LAC 100. Students are introduced to a vocabulary of about 250 new words. They are taught the writing of Chinese characters, the pronunciation of characters in Hanyu Pinyin and also the complex form of Chinese characters. They will be exposed to the 214 radicals and learn that the change of radicals in a character leads to a change in meaning of the character. They will also be taught to write moderately long (about 180 words) compositions, to memorise the texts used and to translate the texts and dialogues.
LAC 300 - Chinese Language III
This is a continuation of LAC 200. Students are introduced to a vocabulary of about 300 new words. Hanyu Pinyin will no longer be taught but the pronunciation of the new vocabulary will still be based on Hanyu Pinyin. Students will be exposed to characters containing a wider range of radicals and be required to compose essays of about 250 words.
LAC 400 - Chinese Language IV
This is a continuation of LAC 300. Students are introduced to a vocabulary of about 350 new words and exposed to more difficult texts, idioms and proverbs. Students will be required to write compositions of about 300 words in length. They will be taught to read Chinese articles and newspapers.
THIRD LANGUAGE COURSES
Third Language Courses are offered as University Courses. They are offered as a package of three (3) levels, 2 units per level. The total number of units per package is 6. Students who sign up for this package will obtain one (1) extra unit upon graduation.

LTC 100 - Communicative Chinese I
This is an elementary course for learning Chinese. This course introduces 200 words in Chinese and the Hanyu Pinyin phonetic system which encompasses aspects of pronunciation including 21 initial sounds, 35 final sounds and the 4 tones of Chinese. Students are required to speak and read the Chinese script based on Hanyu Pinyin. Approximately 400 words will be taught including nouns, verbs, numbers, greetings, interrogatives and collective nouns.
LTC 200 - Communicative Chinese II
This is a continuation of the LTC 100 course. This is Intermediate Level I Chinese. It introduces 250 words in Chinese and an advanced level of the Hanyu Pinyin phonetic system.
Students are required to speak and read the Chinese script based on Hanyu Pinyin. Students are also required to identify the standard Chinese script. This will help the students in reading texts and writing the words that have been listed. The vocabulary taught will be approximately 500 words including nouns, verbs, numbers, greetings, interrogatives, adverbs, adjectives, conjunctions and collective nouns. In addition, students will be trained to memorise and translate simple texts as well as converse in Chinese.
LTC 300 - Communicative Chinese III
This is a continuation of LTC 200 and is Intermediate Level II Chinese. It introduces 300 words in Chinese and a more advanced level of the Hanyu Pinyin phonetic system.
Students are required to read and write the Chinese script accurately. Radicals are taught so that students can use the Chinese dictionary for independent learning. Approximately 600 words including nouns, verbs, numbers, greetings, interrogativess, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and collective nouns will be taught. Apart from that, students are required to translate simple texts and write short essays.
