Arabic

The foreign language courses offered by the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation can be taken by students as option or compulsory courses or to fulfil the number of units required for graduation. Students are not allowed to register for more than one foreign language course per semester. They must complete at least two levels of a foreign language course before they are allowed to register for another foreign language course. However, students are not required to complete all four levels of a foreign language course.
LAA 100 – Arabic Language I
This basic course is to expose students to the Arabic characters and the right pronunciation. This course also introduces vocabularies in the Arabic language and ways to use them in simple sentences for everyday communication.
LAA 200 – Arabic Language II
Level II provides brief exposure on Arabic writing as a revision. Students are then taught communication skills suitable for this level. They are also taught to recognize nouns, verbs and prepositions in Arabic and at the same time expand their vocabularies.
LAA 300 – Arabic Language III
Level III introduces students to the use of various sentence structures by detailed explanation of the types of verbs. Students will also be trained to use vocabularies to construct complete sentences in advanced communication.
LAA 400 – Arabic Language 1V
In Level IV, emphasis is given to the use of grammar following the correct Arabic style and thus students are to practise it in communication. Writing skills are also emphasized through repetitive drillings and at the same time the understanding of the language is done through discussion using suitable articles.
THIRD LANGUAGE COURSES
Third Language Courses are offered as University Courses. They are offered as a package of three (3) levels, 2 units per level. The total number of units per package is 6. Students who sign up for this package will obtain one (1) extra unit upon graduation.

LTA 200/2 Intermediate Communicative Arabic
LTA 300/2 Advanced Communicative Arabic
LTA 100 - Elementary Communicative Arabic
This course emphasises the communicative aspect of learning. Students will be taught basic communication related to personal information and understanding and answering questions. Students will also be taught the Arabic alphabet, articulation of each alphabet, the use of alphabets in a word and their usage in short sentences. Apart from that, they will be introduced to the Arabic nouns, verbs and particles. Cultural aspects such as greetings and leave taking as well as expressions of a religious nature will be introduced. The vocabulary size at this level is 400.
LTA 200 - Intermediate Communicative Arabic
Students will learn everyday situational dialogues that take place at the grocery store, library, post office, hospital, etc. At this level, students will be exposed to more complex grammar. In addition, discussions on the culture and lifestyle of the Arabs such as visitation customs, food and taboos will be conducted. The vocabulary size at this level is 800.
LTA 300 - Advanced Communicative Arabic
This course will introduce a variety of conversational situations in communication. Topics to be introduced at this level include situations prior to and during job applications, situations at the office, at the pharmacy, at the airport and at the customs and immigration office. Conversations will involve the use of correct grammar and emphasis will be on the construction of simple sentences. Students will also be exposed to cultural norms in terms of attire and as well as customs related to making enquiries and expressing appreciations. At this level, students should be able to use a vocabulary range of approximately 1200 words.
