Terminology Service Unit
The Terminology Committee of Universiti Pulau Pinang (Universiti Sains Malaysia was known as Universiti Pulau Pinang until 1972) was initially set up to manage the need for the development, coordination and compilation of terminologies in Bahasa Malaysia at the University. In order to implement the Bahasa Malaysia Policy, Universiti Pulau Pinang required new terminologies in teaching, learning and administration. Therefore, the Committee felt that efforts in the development of terminologies would be faster, more efficient and systematic if a unit was set up.
In 1974, The Terminology Service Unit (UPI) of Universiti Sains Malaysia was set up with the following main objectives:
To function as a one-stop centre providing translation, editing and other services related to terminology and language for the USM community in particular and the public in general.
To coin and invent terminologies in disciplines/sub-disciplines to meet the current terminology requirement for courses offered at USM
Coining and inventing terminologies were done by 20 schools through their terminology committees (JIPP) at USM.
The Terminology Service Unit acts as the secretariat to all JIPPs and the Terminology Committee of Terminology (Main Campus), USM.
Terminologies which are coined and invented are published in the form of terminology books / glossaries / dictionaries used as references by students in particular.
To coordinate, strengthen and disseminate the use of available terminologies, either produced by JIPPUSM, DBP (Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka) or MABBIM (Majlis Bahasa Brunei- Darulsalam, Indonesia dan Malaysia) for the USM community in particular and the public in general.
